# Install Inillucent

You are installing **Inillucent 2.8.1**, MIT licensed: an embedded SQL database with vector
and keyword search in one file. It installs `inillucent` (the command line, with `--output
json` on every command), `inillucent-shell` (shaped like `sqlite3`), `inillucent-mcp` (an MCP
server), `inillucent-migrate` (SQLite, PostgreSQL or MySQL in, one verified database out), and the
C library with its header. Nothing is written outside the home directory and nothing needs
administrator rights.

## 1. Install, for this operating system

Check `uname -s` (`Darwin`, `Linux`) or for Windows, then follow one section.

### Windows

```powershell
irm https://inillucent.com/downloads/install.ps1 | iex
```

Unpacks into `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\inillucent` and adds its `bin` to the user PATH.

### Linux, x86-64 or ARM

```sh
curl -fsSL https://inillucent.com/downloads/install.sh | sh
```

The script reads `uname -m` and picks `x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu` or `aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu`
itself. It unpacks into `~/.local/share/inillucent` and links the four programs into
`~/.local/bin`. glibc 2.28 or newer.

### macOS

```sh
curl -fsSL https://inillucent.com/downloads/install.sh | sh
```

The same script as Linux. It picks the universal archive, which runs on Apple silicon and Intel,
and installs it the same way. There is also a signed installer package at
https://inillucent.com/downloads/inillucent-2.8.1.pkg.

## 2. PATH, if the script did not set it

Windows sets the user PATH itself, so open a new terminal; if the command is still not found, add
`%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\inillucent\bin`. On Linux and macOS add the bin directory, usually with
`export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"` in `~/.bashrc` or `~/.zshrc`.

## 3. Check it worked

```sh
inillucent --version
```

It must print `inillucent 2.8.1`. Not found means PATH, not the install: open a new terminal.

## 4. Make the first database

```sh
inillucent create app.rdb
inillucent --db app.rdb exec "CREATE TABLE note (id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, body TEXT)"
inillucent --db app.rdb query "SELECT * FROM note"
```

Exit code 3 means "this engine has not built that", a different code from 1 on purpose: it is not a
syntax error, so do not start rewording the SQL.

## 5. Register the MCP server

Point `--root` at the directory the agent works in, so the server refuses every path resolving
outside it. `--readonly` refuses every statement that would change something; leave it off if the
agent should be able to write.

In **Claude Code** and in **Codex** the server command goes after a `--`:

```sh
claude mcp add inillucent -- inillucent-mcp --db app.rdb --root .
codex  mcp add inillucent -- inillucent-mcp --db app.rdb --root .
```

**Any other client**, in its own config:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "inillucent": {
      "command": "inillucent-mcp",
      "args": ["--db", "app.rdb", "--root", ".", "--readonly"]
    }
  }
}
```

Confirm it registered with `claude mcp list` or `codex mcp list`.

## The prompt that sent you here

```
Download and install Inillucent on this machine. It is an embedded SQL database with vector and keyword search, in one file, with an MCP server.
1. Fetch https://inillucent.com/install.md and follow the steps for my operating system.
2. Confirm it worked by running `inillucent --version`.
3. Register the MCP server with this agent using the MCP section of that page.
4. Then tell me the version you installed, where the four programs are, and the command that creates my first database.
```
